Function, operation and possible problems with the Mover, with tips on how to resolve them

The Mover is an enormous help when manoeuvring caravans, helping you move your caravan to its parking spot effortlessly. To make sure that everything turns out well while your curious camp site neighbours are watching, you should familiarise yourself with the control unit beforehand by using the practical step-by-step instructions.

You’ll see that the remote control, control unit and drive unit are precisely tuned to each other. This is based on years of experience and high quality. However, malfunctions can occasionally occur. We’ll explain what can cause these problems and tell you what to do.

How the Mover works

The Mover XT consists of two separate drive assemblies, each with its own 12 V DC motor. These units are mounted on the frame of the vehicle in the immediate vicinity of the wheels, and are connected by a lateral bar..

The brushless motor drives the spur gear via the motor electronics. The spur gear transfers the movement to the drive roller via sprockets. The drive rollers are swung onto the tyres by remote control and the caravan can be moved. As soon as the remote control is released, the Mover is slowed down via the safety brake.

Step-by-step instructions: how to operate your Mover XT

Left, right, forward, backward: the Mover control unit is intuitive and extremely easy to use. Nevertheless, we recommend that you familiarise yourself with the functions of the remote control beforehand and try out a few practice manoeuvres on open ground.

Let’s get started:

Unplug the 13-pole plug/adapter from the towing vehicle and plug it into the safety socket on the caravan.
Switch on the remote control with the on/off switch (a) on the right-hand side. The green LED (4) flashes until the control unit is ready for operation. Note: During manoeuvring, the distance between the remote control and the middle of the caravan must not exceed ten metres.

Engaging

Engage the Mover on the tyres. To do this, press the buttons (i) simultaneously for about three seconds. When the rollers start moving towards the tyres, release the buttons.
If you press the two disengagement buttons during engagement, the process is interrupted. The drive rollers are disengaged and move automatically to the end position.
When the drive rollers are engaged on the tyres, release the parking brake. You can now manoeuvre your caravan with the Mover.

Moving the caravan forward and backward

Slowly move the slide control (c) forward: the caravan moves forward in the direction of the drawbar. The more you move the control forward, the faster the caravan moves.
Move the slide control (c) backward: the caravan drives backward. The more you move the control backward, the faster the caravan moves.

Turning the caravan

Turn the control knob (b) to the right (caravan drawbar on the control knob points to the right) and the caravan turns to the right.
Turn the control knob (b) to the left (caravan drawbar on the control knob points to the left) and the caravan turns to the left.

Turning corners

The speed and bend radius are freely selectable. The speed increases the more you move the slide control forward or backward.
Turn the control knob (b) to the right and move the slide control (c) forward slowly at the same time: the caravan makes a right turn forward.
Turn the control knob (b) to the left and move the slide control (c) forward slowly at the same time: the caravan makes a left turn forward.
Turn the control knob (b) to the right and move the slide control (c) backward slowly at the same time: the caravan makes a right turn backward.
Turn the control knob (b) to the left and move the slide control (c) backward slowly at the same time: the caravan makes a left turn backward.

Disengaging

Engage the parking brake.
Only then disengage the Mover from the tyres. To do this, press the buttons (h) simultaneously for about three seconds. When the rollers start moving away from the tyres, release the buttons.
Switch off the remote control with the on/off switch (a) on the right-hand side. Note: The remote control switches itself off after about one minute if none of the buttons are pressed. To reactivate the remote control in cases such as this, switch off the remote control with the switch (a) and switch it on again after about one second.
After manoeuvring, remove the plug/adapter from the safety socket; otherwise the battery will be discharged.

Mover does not respond: this is what you can do

You’ve switched on the remote control but the Mover doesn't respond. This could be due to several reasons. Before contacting our Service department, try the following:

Check that the batteries in the remote control are in good condition and, if necessary, insert new batteries. Only use batteries that are heat resistant and leak-proof.
Check whether the caravan plug or adapter is inserted correctly in the safety socket.
Check whether the caravan battery that supplies the control unit of the Mover with power is fully charged. Remember that battery performance can deteriorate considerably at cold ambient temperatures.
Check that the fuse in the battery connector cable is in working order. If the fuse is defective, check the connector cable for possible short circuits.
If the red warning triangle symbol (LED 3) on the remote control illuminates, this indicates a system error. In this case apply the parking brake, switch the remote control off and then on again after two seconds.
Reset with the parking brake applied. To do this, disconnect the battery briefly or disconnect the safety plug and then connect again.

Remote control flashes / sends acoustic signals

When you switch on the remote control of the Mover, using the slide switch on the side, it carries out a self-test. After a few seconds, the green switch-on symbol (LED 4) flashes briefly and then illuminates continuously. This means that the remote control is ready for operation and the radio link is stable

If, after switching on the remote control you hear an acoustic signal (four times) and the red warning triangle (LED 3) is also flashing, there is no connection between the remote control and the control unit. This could be due to several reasons:

No battery voltage: check the voltage of your 12 V battery.
Poor-quality batteries in the remote control: use high-quality batteries that are heat resistant and leak-proof.
Battery voltage too low in the remote control: it must be at least 3.6 V.

If one or more LEDs are illuminated or flashing simultaneously and there is also an acoustic signal, this can be due to many different reasons. For example, the flashing can indicate a disruption in the radio link or that the battery charge is too low.

Red flashing on the control unit

If the driving functions of your Mover are restricted (you cannot drive around corners, for example) there may be a defect in the control unit. Therefore, don’t only pay attention to the error messages indicated by flashing on the remote control, but also take a look at the control unit.

In case of a malfunction, the control unit sends an eight-digit flashing code – this is a sequence of long and short flashes. If this is the case, contact the Truma Service department or one of our Service Partners. Only they will be able to determine a fault for example in the motor electronics.

Proceed as follows:

Make sure that the drive rollers are not in contact with the wheel.
Check that the 12 V battery is properly connected to the control unit.
Plug the caravan plug into the safety socket.
Switch the control unit on and wait about 15 seconds until the red LED (j) on the control unit flashes slowly.
Switch the remote control off.
Press the reset button (k) on the control unit until the red LED (j) flashes rapidly.
Press and hold the engagement button (i) on the remote control and switch the remote control on with the slide switch (a). Release the engagement button.
If the control unit and remote control are tuned, the red LED (j) on the control unit and the green LED on the remote control (LED 4) remain permanently on.

If tuning was unsuccessful, the red LED (j) on the control unit flashes and you have to repeat the procedure.

Proceed as follows:

Check that installation has been carried out in accordance with the installation instructions, and make sure that the drive rollers are not engaged. Check that the caravan battery is properly connected and its condition.
Switch off the remote control with the slide switch (a).
After switching on the control unit (e.g. battery cut-off switch), wait (for about 15 seconds) until the red LED (j) starts flashing slowly.
Press the reset button (k) on the control unit (LED (j) flashes more rapidly) until the red LED (j) flashes very rapidly.
Turn the control knob (b) all the way to the left and hold it in place – push the slide control (c) all the way forwards and hold it in place, and at the same time switch on the remote control using the slide switch (a). Release the control knob (b) and slide control (c) within 10 seconds.
When the devices have been successfully tuned, the red LED (j) on the control unit flashes very rapidly and the green LED 4 on the remote control remains permanently on.
If tuning was unsuccessful, the red LED (j) flashes and you have to repeat the process.

Proceed as follows:

Check the installation in accordance with the installation instructions and ensure that the drive rollers are not applied. Check that the battery is properly connected, check the condition of the battery and that a voltage of 12 V is present at the control unit. Please ensure that the caravan plug has been plugged into the safety socket.
Press the reset button (k) on the control unit and hold down (red LED – j – flashes slowly), and after approx. 5 seconds the LED (j) starts to flash rapidly. Then release the reset button and press and hold down the caravan reverse button on the remote hand set (c) within 10 seconds, simultaneously switching on the remote hand set using the slide switch (a). The remote hand set and the control unit are synchronised to each other. After successful synchronisation, the red LED flashes rapidly.

If you cannot disengage the rollers from the wheels, the caravan battery may be too weak or defective. You then have to disengage them manually

Proceed as follows:

Engage the parking brake.
On the drive unit remove the respective plastic cap with a screwdriver.
Place the socket wrench (included in scope of delivery) on the hex bolt and disengage the drive unit by turning the bolt clockwise.
Repeat this procedure on the opposite side.

Tips for handling and operating the Mover

Follow these tips so that you can use your Mover for a long time and prevent malfunctions occuring in the first place:

Mover battery

Suitable board batteries that supply power to the Mover are deep cycle-resistant 12 volt lead-gel batteries or AGM batteries, such as the Optima Yellowtop.
If you are parked for more than 24 hours, interrupt the electric circuit, for example on the battery cut-off switch or by disconnecting the battery poles.
If the battery is not used for a long time, charge it for 24 hours at least every twelve weeks.
In winter, remove the battery and store the fully charged battery in a cool place protected against frost. The battery should also be charged regularly in this case.
Between the battery and control unit there should be a gap of at least 40 cm, otherwise, there could be malfunctions in the radio transmission.

Drive roller

The gap between the disengaged drive rollers and tyres must be 2 cm, otherwise the pressure will not be correct and the tyres may be damaged.
If the drive rollers have to be replaced, you can do this yourself. Remove the top, undo the retaining ring and remove the roller. Insert the new roller with retaining ring and press the top firmly onto the roller again.

Remote control

For the remote control, use only leak-proof, heat resistant microbatteries with a steel casing, LR 03, AAA, AM 4, MN 2400 (1.5 V).
Empty, used batteries can leak and damage the remote control. Remove the batteries if the remote control is not being used for an extended period of time.

Maintaining the Mover

We recommend that you clean your Mover once per year or before you intend not using it for a longer period.

Rinse the Mover with a hose to remove mud, for instance.
Make sure that no stones, twigs etc. are trapped in it.
Let the Mover dry well and lightly spray moving parts with silicone spray or another repelling lubricant. Make sure that the spray does not get on to the rollers or tyres. Then engage and disengage the drive units a few times.
The control unit does not require maintenance.
Keep the remote control in a dry place.
